It's been tough to stay positive in 2020 with so many negative things happening. But I've found a glimmer of hope, and it was with my neighborhood, East Passyunk Square. From neighbors on my block to the small businesses and restaurants fighting to stay alive. That's why I spent a month working on a photo essay series about the businesses in East Passyunk Square. I've lived in Philly for 15 years and moved to East Passyunk Square 10 years ago to dig my roots in deep. I'm raising a family here and truly call this my home. What brought us here was Passyunk Avenue, coming to new life a decade ago. Before Covid it was always bustling. New restaurants were opening up every month. Festivals were every weekend. Unique small businesses were always keeping it fresh. So when Covid-19 hit and shops were closed, I was deeply concerned about our neighborhood's future. I'm not anymore. I had the privilege of meeting and spending time with 19 businesses and restaurants to learn how they are surviving. These entrepreneurs are working their hardest to keep their dreams alive. They and their staff will work in the middle of a pandemic without complaint, and we are all benefitting from their sacrifice.
The following photo essay is about small businesses and restaurants on the Avenue. This is a passion project. I was not paid to do this. I hope this project encourages you to buy local in a time when Amazon and big box stores are doing better than ever. I encourage you to order food locally, tip generously, be patient, and follow Covid-19 restrictions. At the very least, wear a mask because these folks are risking their health to make it to 2021 and serve you as a customer.
